It was the pandemic, and I had a presentation to ten board members of one of the top banks in South Africa. Of course the website crashed during this, and I told my client to keep them busy while my lead developer and I figured it out. In that time, 10 minutes felt like hours. Anyway, the presentation was a success, and my client and I ended up having a good laugh about it. (My client was the head of business banking btw)

Why am I taking this trip down memory lane? Because I swear there is nothing more embarrassing than a family member, colleague or close friend reading a book you’ve written and needing to explain some of the choices you’ve made in story telling 😂

But since I like the challenge apparently, Legion of Pride, the first in my new series launches this month! Comment Dexter, and I’ll send you everything you need to know.

But anyway, ARC’s have been out for a few weeks and feedback is slowly starting to roll in. I had no idea what to expect going into this story, and I’m so proud of how it turned out. I can’t wait for you to meet Iris and her story.

QOTD: Tell me something quirky or memorable that your pet has done?

Sasha our border collie, is almost a year old, can you believe it! She’s really well behaved despite being a teenager, but every now and then she reminds us what she’s capable of. Like trying to jump into random strangers cars. Or going to sit with strangers on the bus.

Coming up with new content ideas is always a challenge when trying to get your book in front of the right readers, so let’s chat about content warnings. For those unfamiliar with the term, it’s something authors include in the beginning of a book so a reader can make an informed decision if the darker nature of our work is for them or not. They’re not intended to be spoilers, even though some readers argue they are.

In my opinion, they should never be used for shock value. They should only be included if the character naturally goes that direction. Because let me tell you, one of these content warnings were something I never thought I would have to include in mine (even if it’s only mentioned for one chapter).

QOTD: Have you read a HM Wolfe book?

This is my first HM Wolfe book and she’s immediately become one of my autobuy authors.

Because I’m a vibes girlie, it’s very rare I open any book and think of the author’s writing style. But not with this author, she’s an incredibly gifted writer and it’s so easy to immerse yourself in the world she’s created. Within the first chapter, it felt like I was in this hybrid Sin City and Hunger Games novel.

There is not much I can tell you about the plot without it moving into spoiler territory, but I will tell you that Shadera, the FMC is the one I’ve needed for a very long time. I think she may be one of my top 3 of all time.

Crying in books isn’t my thing, but there was a moment with the rebellion and singing to defy their captors (IYKYK) that I actually got a bit choked up. This book truly has it all.

Am I kicking myself for taking so long to read this? Yes. Would I give anything to have the indie copy of the book? Double yes. But the moment this book gets rereleased as a trad print, I’m going to be first in line to buy it.

I had a conversation with my editor recently, about a change I’ve made to a manuscript which was a risk, but it went down well. And she complimented me for it. My automatic reaction was to dismiss it and focus on the things that could be better, but then I stopped and asked myself why is that?

So in an effort to get better to talking about the things we do well, I love how I’m willing to take chances and I’m not afraid to fail. Legion of Pride is a testament to that. But it’s a story I’m immensely proud of and I have no regrets.

Every year we’ve been on Bookstagram, there has been a wave of boycotting KU. While I’m against this for several reasons (the most obvious being it hurts the author and not JB), finally, I’ve been able to come up with a solution to this.

I’m now offering books for purchasing directly.

I’ve been working with Booksfactory & Bookvault in the Netherlands & UK, and I truly love their quality and I order all my stock from them directly now. So when you order from me, this is where you’re getting your book from.

There may even be sprayed edges in the very near future. 👀

There is an order form in my b10 you can complete. Why an order form and not an online checkout? I thought about it, but because while I’ve found an affordable shipping solution, that may not be something everyone is willing to pay, so I would like to discuss with each person directly before sending an invoice for payment. It’s not to say I wouldn’t do it this way in future, but baby steps.

It may seem a bit harsh to some, but if cozy fantasy is your thing I may not be the right author for you. Let me explain what I mean.

I live a very cozy life, one I’m very proud of, that’s why right now I don’t see me writing about it in the near future. My written work has taken a more darker turn, with lots of action and high stakes.

One of my previous podcast guests said once to me that even if there is magic, there needs to be consequences and I’ve never related to something more. It’s why you will never see me bring a character back to life either.

But when you put this together with my love for darker work, buckle up. There is some emotional damage coming your way in the form of my books in 2026.

Before I started writing the first book in this series, I knew each book name and the series name. It’s a big part of my process, because what I name the book is largely responsible for the direction I take the story.

Another part is the blurb, but that’s not the point of today’s post. Book 2 in this series is already outlined, I know exactly what should happen next (if the characters let it stay that way) and if you think things are wild in book 1, wait until you see what I’ve got in store.

So much so, that right now, I’m going to attempt to plan a rapid release for book 2 and 3 in 2027. I have a strategy that I think can work. But because this is new to me, it very possibly won’t. If you have been here for a while, you know I typically jump between series, and this story keeps replaying in my head, that’s how I knew I had to do something different for this series.

Teaches me to think I can get away with creating a throw away character. Now I’m stuck with two extra side characters who completely took over Legion of Pride.

Meet Charlie. Originally she was supposed to be a man 😂 Her response was “the f*ck I am” - and now I’m stuck with an FBI best friend who wears things like a hot pink blouse to work at a police station. That’s fun.

I love Charlie. We all need someone like her in our lives. I’m sure you can probably see your best friend in her, because that was my goal. There is a special bond between best friends. It’s so different to romantic love, and in some ways, even stronger?

Anyway. I can’t wait for you to meet her and a big thank you to @mithlista for bringing her to life.

But after rewatching Hansel & Gretel Witch Hunters for what’s probably the millionth time, I had an epiphany, what if I told my version of this story? I mean that’s what we do as authors, so why wouldn’t that work for me now?

The romance sub plot caught me off guard though. We all know I don’t write romance, and I would never market this story as one….but I didn’t expect it to be so dominant through the character motivations.

QOTD: Have you read a Sheila Masterson book before?

This is clearly my year of discovering new authors, because I’ve never read from this author before. I’m also thrilled to see she has an extensive backlist! Bonus points for discovering she’s indie, and I had no clue. (Also just shows the incredible quality of this book imo)

There are many things I love about this book, but let’s talk about the maturity of the FMC’s for a second. I haven’t seen in characters for a long time, at least in a fantasy and I didn’t realise how much I missed it until I read it.

Lots of spice, but in an empowering way. That’s something I never expected. And these enemies are next level. I love the mystery surrounding their world. Overall the balance of fantasy, action, suspense and mystery with romance is well done. Some of the plot twists I gasped because I never saw that coming!

While there are a few things I would have loved to see answered on page, that's just me being nosy. Overall, this is a must read for any fantasy lover.

I’ve been thinking a lot about what Penn Cole said about improving craft on the last episode of my podcast. it’s something that’s really stuck with me. Is there a vast difference between the first book I published and my latest? Definitely. Because I always want to be improving and being better than my last book.

So one of the things I’ve been trying to do per book, is write bonus chapters. Things the reader may want to learn, even if it doesn’t fit the current story. It’s also a great way for me to offer something free, and a no obligation way for readers to test my stories to see if it’s for them.

You don't need to read the series to read the bonus chapters and vice versa, but as I always say, you may see the events from the bonus chapters be referred to in the series....

You know how everyone grew up wanting to be a writer? Well that wasn’t me. It was something I was curious to see if I could do and I haven’t stopped since that moment where I finally figured it out.

At times, I wonder if I should have listened to my father and become an engineer. (Yes it was an actual argument we had.) It most likely would have paid better. Because where I am right now, it pays very little. I’ve stopped trying to figure out if I’ve even broken even, now I just do it because it makes me happy.

I really thought hard about why so many writers say something similar to me, how happy it makes them too. And my theory? It’s the one place where we’re in control. No one can tell us what to do. And in a society that dictates a lot to us, that’s refreshing.

Legion of Pride is the book where I can feel I’ve grown most in my writing and story telling skills, a goal I set for myself with every book. Because if I’m not growing, wtf am I even doing…

So here’s the thing about Mary if you work with her. She’s always down to try something once conceptually and she just doesn’t bat an eyelash when I tell her my reference is a movie or a tv series poster.

In this case, you guessed it, it was the Dexter and Criminal Minds posters. Mary absolutely knocked this one out of the park. I truly love working with her and all the pieces we create together!

Legion of Pride is the first in my new series, and is the result of what happens if Dexter was a female, and there was a Supernatural twist. 1.5 months to go until launch!

Mid Feb I will dive into edits for The Fall of the Damned seeing as my developmental edits are done and guys……this is not a drill ... .I think we’re getting a new POV for this book. I never planned for this. I like structure with my POV’s as it’s easier to keep track of the characters and keep their personality separate so to accommodate this new one, that means an existing POV may need to take a step back.

At this point, it’s as much of a guess to me as it is to you….So here’s a quote that I really liked from one of the early drafts. Let’s see if it ends up this way in the final product!

QOTD: Which element chooses you: fire, water, air, earth, lightning, or ice?

Soon I start preparing The Fall of the Damned for beta reading and this is usually the hardest part for me in the creating process. It's where I'm sitting with Dev edits feedback to implement and sometimes it can change the course of the book. In this case that's definitely true.

I'm sure most of you know by now in the final book, I focus more on closure than plot twists, but there was one plot "surprise" I didn't see coming. But it makes so much sense to include I think I was subconsciously trying to set it up like that? Brains are such funny things that way.

I also need to decide if every single character will see the end of this story or not. And I’ve come to love these characters, so it’s really harder than normal for me to decide this. Because remember my rule, if someone unalives, it stays that way. Even if I do have the reincarnation trope….trust me. It’s not what you think it is.

7 months left to go before the final book is out in the world…..More than enough time for you to catch up on the first 2 on KU.

Most of us get into writing with the hopes of telling our story and possibly making a full time career from it. I don’t think any of us think “hey let me devote a few days a week to coming up with creative ways to market our books too.”

I don’t know a single author that enjoys marketing. There is so much about it that we can’t control, including those viral moments that everyone is secretly hoping for.

But here’s the reality. How will a reader find my book if they don’t know about it? That’s what I tell myself every time I get frustrated with marketing. And having fun with it really does go a long way.

I love fashion, but not the couture type, the mix everything until it’s really bright and clashes, but it somehow works type. But I also really love the FMC’s in media like Buffy or Hansel & Gretel witch hunters.

QOTD: Have you read an Elizabeth Briggs book?

I would be lying if I didn’t admit that Elizabeth Briggs story didn’t impact me and make me severely emotional, something I rarely say. While I never share how advanced my cancer was, I was actually stage 4. To many, they will know this diagnosis is usually terminal which is why I couldn’t talk about it for so long. Because I knew if someone said that to me, I wouldn’t handle it well.

My type of stage 4 still had room for curative measures, and I’m grateful everyday that it worked. I think that’s why Elizabeth’s story affected me way more than the other cancer stories. Because it could have been me. (I’m even getting choked up typing this). I even cried in my oncologist’s office for her story during a check up.

While I had decided to write Fragmented before I knew of Liz, she’s heavily influenced some of the decisions I’ve made in this book and maybe one day her daughter will be old enough to know how much her mother inspired people across the world.

This was my first experience with her. It was also my first complete read of 2026. Individually, we’ve seen these themes in our fantasy books before. Vampires, trials, a cruel emperor, a down on her luck FMC. But I truly think the way these elements were put together made it unique. I also think the author’s writing is so easy to follow and get lost in (in a good way).

This was some of the better plot twists I’ve seen in a romantasy recently. But I was a bit underwhelmed with the ending. It felt abrupt knowing the fantastic plot twists we’ve just experienced….

If you’re a romantasy reader, you may struggle with the lack of romance in this book. If we look at the age old question of, does the plot still stand without the romance, the answer is yes. So I was surprised to see this marketed as a romantasy. It’s far more action packed than normal, and it’s more suited to readers like me who prefer that.

All in all the hype is real with this one and I’m now going to be digging into the authors backlist to see what else I can read of hers.

This was some of the better plot twists I’ve seen in a romantasy recently. But I was a bit underwhelmed with the ending. It felt abrupt knowing the fantastic plot twists we’ve just experienced….

If you’re a romantasy reader, you may struggle with the lack of romance in this book. If we look at the age old question of, does the plot still stand without the romance, the answer is yes. So I was surprised to see this marketed as a romantasy. It’s far more action packed than normal, and it’s more suited to readers like me who prefer that.

All in all the hype is real with this one and I’m now going to be digging into the authors backlist to see what else I can read of hers.

I have an incredibly ambitious 2026 planned for my author career. This is not about anything other than I want to try. After my 2025 of beating cancer, it reinforced that I would rather try and fail than not try at all. So not only do I have 3 books planned for publication, I also have a special edition in the works, my first convention and recording season 3 of my podcast.

I know it sounds like a lot, and it is. But truly, this makes me so happy and I wouldn’t want it any other way. What is something you’re looking forward to this year?

Mine has to be I'm swayed by a pretty cover, even if that's all it has. I'm a girl of simple tastes. But I always knew I wanted to do a special edition, I just had to wait for the right series to do it, and after a lot of patience, something that doesn’t come easily to me, we are there.

By now you shouldn't be surprised that this masterpiece was created by @selkkiedesigns - by now you should know I love her.

Officially, this will be the special edition I take with me to conventions. I have one confirmed for 2026 which is very exciting. But I will also open this up to my newsletter subscribers eventually. (Just need to work out the logistics of shipping internationally).

When I was speaking to someone recently, I shared how I didn’t want to be treated differently because of my cancer diagnosis. I’m still capable, I’m still very able and even though I may look different, I can still do things. The person in turn challenged me, “its part of your story. If they can’t accept that, do they even deserve you?”

Man this resonated deeply in my soul, so I’m getting better at talking about it. Today’s topic with it? I think it’s why I’m so obsessed with the reincarnation trope recently. What does it look like if you live with regret, and then get another chance? (I’m sure you can see the beating cancer parallel somewhere here)

Fragmented is my first standalone, and it’s also my first fairytale retelling. I’m drafting this baby at the moment, and it’s the most ambitious thing I’ve ever done.

With editing, a cover, etc, I can see the return on my investment, and character art is a bit harder to equate to something like that. But it’s something I am trying to get better at in 2026 as I know it’s something the readers want to see more of.

Midway through my cancer treatment, I made a list of things I still wanted to do. I’m pretty good about not living with regrets, but somethings are a bit harder to get right (usually because of money). So now, I have a cancer goal board in my office, and I’m checking my goals off one by one. This is one of them. I’ve never been to any Disney park, and this was an absolute must for me.

That we got it right over New Years eve was just a stroke of luck, and it’s moments like this that remind me that magic does still exist in real life.

Mine has to be Vampire Academy by Richelle Meade. But there is something special about discovering a new author and loving the first book with them. Shadow of Lillith combines my three requirements for a book. Action, Fantasy and a touch of romance. My bonus requirement is it’s not predictable, and I’m not going to lie, I messaged the author after this and told her some of the plot points were diabolical.

If you’re looking for a new dark urban fantasy to fill the gap, I couldn’t recommend this one more!

Man did I underestimate how challenging it was going to be writing the conclusion to a story with a cast this big. It’s wild actually. (This is where feedback becomes especially important!)

Slowly but surely I’m getting there though and that includes making a very big decision plot wise that is a big departure from my previous structure. (Trust me it's needed. The same structure wasn't working for the final book)

While this may not be my first series I’ve completed, it doesn’t stop me from having to pay extra special attention to not introducing plot holes into my own story. I find myself needing to check book 1 for events, to make sure I don’t contradict myself by the time I finish writing book 3. Which makes sense in it’s own way, I launched The Rule of the Damned in 2024, and by the time I release The Fall of the Damned, it will be 2026.

I also underestimated how large my cast was and how many sub plots I'm going to have to wrap up 👀

I don’t even want to admit to how many tabs I have open with notes, just to make sure I don’t miss something. But I also remind myself, this is why we have writing teams. They will help catch what I miss.

WRONG.

You’ve heard me talk multiple times about how the characters take over and that’s especially true with this series. It’s a big part of how I write, and don’t overthink plot points too much. Usually the first instinct is the right one after all.

As I start work on implementing this beta feedback, I can’t help but smile at how far my experience with beta reading has come. At first, it wasn’t something I even knew I needed to do as an author, and then I had to experience a lot of trial and error as I found the right fit for the stories I wanted to tell.

While I beta read for authors, it's usually only when I'm available or have capacity. As this is something I do for free (like most beta readers) I had no problem setting those boundaries. But that's also the challenge I ran into when needed a beta reader. So this time, I did something different and used a paid service and it was the missing link I was looking for!

I think it’s safe to say that I’ve finally found my match with @melissasmithediting - this was my first experience working with her and definitely not the last. I’ve already got her booked for the next two books, and I definitely plan for more.

More character art, an audio book, movie trailers, etc and it’s hard not to be demotivated to hear the things you’re not doing instead of being seen for the things you are. To feel like you’re not doing enough. What’s the saying? “Comparison is the thief of joy” and that’s never been more true.

I share this not because I need the validation, but because I want you to know that I go through these feelings too. I just choose not to post them online, because then that’s letting these emotions win.

So I would love to flip this narrative into something positive. Let’s celebrate the people we see making a difference. I’ll go first.
