Formatting books for release

When I started my author journey, there was a lot I needed to learn as I wrote. One of them was book formatting. It sounds silly saying that out loud now, but looking back on it it was one of the hardest things for me to get right. Google docs, or Word is limited, at least with knowledge like mine, and I needed a designer to help me with this part and even then, it wasn't a foolproof process. There were still mistakes that slipped through (like blank pages where there shouldn't be).

Then, at the beginning of the year, I was introduced to both Atticus and Vellum and it changed everything.

Both of these programmes are formatting software, specifically designed for books, both print and Ebook. There is no wrong answer to which one is better, it depends entirely on the author, but I ended up going for Atticus. I found the only difference between these two programmes was price (Atticus is cheaper) and operating systems they work on. (Vellum only works on Mac). I've since formatted two books with this software, and while it does have it's limitations because it's not 100% customisable, it's solved a big inefficiency in my author journey and now a 2 week process for formatting my books, takes 2 - 3 days at most. Less, if I do it on a non working day.

The main point of this post is sharing this knowledge. Because I've mentioned on this social media before, and so many authors like me, didn't know this. So my hope is if another author stumbles across this post and didn't know this information before, now they do.
