Not all ideas are good ones

I have this habit of accidentally creating new series ideas faster than I can write them (just go look at my latest post of the series I'm working on). True to form, last year, I announced this series idea and I've always wanted to write a series partially set in a water world. Sirens? Underwater life? Evil witch queens? SOLD. Also, I think this may be my coolest series name so far.

But these characters never shouted at me loudly enough, and that's a big part of the way I write. I need to feel called to write a series, and to let the characters tell their stories. But that never happened for me, and I went on to write The Rule of the Damned, and another new series idea came to me, which I felt a lot stronger about, then the Watery Crown Collection.

Every time I tried to re-look at the plot, I noticed it was relying too much on frequent tropes I had seen too many times in other fantasy books. When I adjusted it to an urban fantasy, instead of an epic fantasy, it still didn't work for me. It felt too bland. If there is one thing I pride myself on, it's having a unique take in each of my series. Even if it references well known elements we all love.

But that never happened with The Watery Crown Collection, so it's led me to realise this series is not meant to see the light of day. At least not yet. Maybe one day I will revisit this concept. But until then, it's going into the archive, and I'm focusing on all my series that are actually calling to me. After all, not all ideas are good ones.
